Over 80% of the membership of the cults is composed of ex-Christians who were once members of orthodox denominations. Christians must be grounded in the Word of God if they are to avoid suffering the same fate (Heb. 5:12-14). We must be sure of our beliefs and be able to back them up with the Bible (1 Pet. 3:15; Col. 4:6). The cultist speaks the Christian’s language (Matt. 7:15-23; 2 Cor. 11:13-15) but he worships “another Jesus” (2 Cor. 11:1-4).

The Bible warns of the rise of false religions in our day, (See 2 Tim. 3:1-9, 4:3-4; 2 Pet. 2:1-3, 18, 19; 1 Tim. 4:1-3; 1 Jn. 4:1-6.) Many of them appear to be Christian but they have redefined biblical terminology into a language that is completely foreign to the Bible. For example, a Jehovah’s Witness will say he believes in Jesus. But to him, Jesus is “Michael the archangel, first creation of Jehovah-God, who came to earth as a man, died and rose as a spirit.”

What can Christians do? We must always remember we are in a spiritual warfare (2 Cor. 10:4; Eph. 6:12) and our only weapon is the Word of God (Eph. 6:16-17). The real issue is the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ (Mat. 22:42). To arrive at that issue the Christian must not allow himself to be sidetracked and he must force the cultist to define his terminology. The context of Scripture is to be maintained at all times when dealing with the cultist. We must never resort to argument (1 Tim. 6:20-21; 2 Tim. 2:16).

If our witness is not accepted by the cultist, we must part company with him (2 Jn. 10, 11; Titus 3:10-11; Rom. 16:17-18). And we must ever be mindful that our sufficiency is of God (2 Cor. 3:5-6) and only through God’s strength (Phil. 4:13) can we be the victor over the cultist (Rom. 8:31,37).

Do not be deceived by religion. Satan has his own church (Rev. 2:9), complete with apostles, prophets, pastors, and teachers (2 Cor. 11:13-15; 2 Pet. 2:1-3). Through them he presents a false gospel (Gal. 1:6-9) about a false Jesus (2 Cor. 11:4) by means of a false spirit (2 Cor. 11:4; 1 Jn. 4:1-3). Know the truth (the Word of God) and the “truth shall make you free” (Jn. 8:32).
